4 Talented Artists Putting Out Music Videos We Love

The music videos of these four artists are setting the bar high with their wildly creative imagery, over-the-top wardrobes, resonant narratives, and more.

As a video production company, we know it takes an entire team to produce a music video. But it’s the artist, their vision, and the music that drive the project and its people. A killer music video has the ability to transform a great song into your favorite song of the year. Imagery is powerful that way — artists know this.

There’s a sea of incredible music videos out there from artists many of us love, like Kendrick Lamar’s “Humble” or the latest work from Tyler, the Creator for his Call Me if You Get Lost album. Some of their music videos are not much different than traditional filmmaking, incorporating stylistic cinematography, narrative, mood, wardrobe — you name it. They take the art of filmmaking seriously and use it to bring their music to life.

This week, I’m spotlighting four musicians who are constantly putting out music videos we love. Their work is unique and they create imagery that sticks with you. You can tell they have a passion for creating, pushing artistic boundaries, and entertaining.

  1. Tierra Whack

  2. Baby Keem

  3. Audrey Nuna

  4. Blood Orange

1. Tierra Whack

Tierra Whack has to be one of the most talented and unique rap artists around today. Not only is she a lyrical genius, but her music videos are wildly creative. I remember the first time I saw a Tierra Whack music video. It was "Unemployed." It started normal enough, but like most of her music videos, things get stranger and stranger. But I'm here for it — give me all the bizarre talking objects and stop motion strangeness.

In 2018, Whack created a 15-minute short film featuring each song on the Whack World album. I love when artists do this, especially one as talented as Tierra Whack. It's one of the coolest and most creative shorts I've seen. Check it out below:

2. Baby Keem

Baby Keem's music videos worm their way into your brain long after watching. He and his team are constantly making choices in his videos that stand out to me, whether it's his spotlight lighting or how he stares directly into the camera completely blank-faced (it feels so intimate).

One of his latest music videos, "Family Ties," layers images and creates a collage of varied images. I love how he reframes styles and spaces, like the woman twerking on him in the beginning, and then minutes later, ballerinas surround him in a marble museum-esque space. Bringing rap culture into "refined" spaces is so cool. It reminds me of The Carters' music video for "Apeshit."

I chose to feature Baby Keem's music video "Hooligan" because I return to it often — it's just so good. They use that spotlight lighting I love, and if you haven't seen this one by him yet, you'll notice some of the other interesting decisions he made. Check it out:

3. Audrey Nuna

Audrey Nuna — her singing voice is insane, she raps, and her music videos are crazy. I first came across Nuna when YouTube suggested her music video "Space" to me, and I instantly became a huge fan. Every video I clicked on thereafter was unique and different from anything I had seen before. The one that really sold me was her video "damn Right," you can see it below.

4. Blood Orange

There’s no other way to describe Blood Orange (Devonté Hynes) than as a true artist. Not only do we get the voice of an angel, but his music and videos are like poetry. They make you feel and think and get curious. Many of his songs, including ones with music videos, often begin with a monologue of sorts. He’s excellent at creative narrative in this way, unlocking the door for his listeners to learn or feel heard.

His music has this sort of 80’s vibe, and his music videos work so well with that. They always exude a sense of joy and freedom, a calling to be yourself. A great example of this is his music video for the song “Charcoal Baby” — check it out below:

To Close,

These individuals aren’t exclusively musicians — they’re artists. And filmmaking is just another medium for them to express themselves. Especially Audrey Nuna and Tierra Whack, they are so deeply themselves. Their craft shows their unique style. When you’re creating from the heart like that, that’s when you get music videos that are works of artistic expression.
